Culrain Burn and Waterfalls
Behind our house in Carbisdale Woods the lovely Culrain Burn tumbles through the trees. Part of the "yellow route" through Carbisdale Woods takes you alongside this lovely stream with a series of waterfalls, and eventually leads to a secluded and tranquil lochan. There are a series of waterfalls, from about a hundred meters behind our house up to the lochan. The lower falls are accessible from a small path beside a bridge over the Culrain Burn (about 300 meters walk from our house), and the upper falls are accessed from the main track to the Lochan. There is a bench near the upper falls. When the burn is in spate after a heavy rainfall the falls are paricularly fine. This area behind our house beside the stream is quite magical with its mossy woods and rock pools. The stream can also be heard from the garden.
The waterfalls are of course best enjoyed when the weather has been wet, and there are also other fine, and larger, waterfalls near Culrain:
- Cassley Falls, Rosehall
- East Amat Falls, Strathcarron
- Eas Charron Falls, Glen Alladale
- Shin Falls near Lairg
- Also the pretty Kincardine Burn near Ardgay has a small waterfall
