Directions by Rail and Bus
There is a railway station at Culrain within 10-20 minutes walk of the Bed and Breakfast. It is on the main Inverness to Wick / Thurso line and is served by several trains per day (only one train on Sundays) in each direction. There is also a bus service (not Sundays) from Tain or Lairg to Ardgay from where you can catch a taxi, or to Invershin which is about 20-30 minutes walk from Culrain via a scenic footbridge over the Kyle of Sutherland. We can meet you at Culrain station, or arrange a taxi from Ardgay, if you let us know in advance.
From Inverness and Dingwall by train - the "Three Firths Route"
Trains for Culrain leave Inverness at 1038, 1400 and 1828 and take around an hour and a half. Please remind the guard to remind the driver to stop at Culrain as it is a request stop! The line follows a staggeringly beautiful route, starting west along the Beauly Firth to Dingwall (where the train sometimes divides for Kyle of Lochalsh so please make sure you are not in that section of the train!), then north along the Cromarty Firth, turning west again after Tain along the Dornoch Firth. It is a truly scenic route and we recommend you sit on the right hand side of the train for the views of the three Firths, though there are fine views inland from the left hand side.
There are also additional trains from Inverness which terminate at Tain and Ardgay from where it is possible to catch buses to Invershin (see below) if you like to walk, or a taxi (from Ardgay) directly to the house.
Timetables are on the Scotrail website. Please select the one marked "Inverness & the North Highlands".
From Inverness and Dingwall by bus
The easiest way to do this is to head for Tain via the X99 or 25X service from Inverness. From Tain, catch the local bus to Lairg for Ardgay and Invershin - buses leave Tain shortly after 10am, shortly after 1pm, and just before 7pm, Mondays to Saturdays, and an extra bus on Saturday at around 4pm. Please call Macleod Coaches on 01408 641 354 to check the times as they may change. If you are walking, get off at Invershin, cross the Kyle of Sutherland on the footbridge (with views of Carbisdale Castle), then follow the footpath to Culrain railway station. If you need transport, you can get off the bus in Ardgay and catch a taxi - please contact us in advance so that we can arrange a taxi for you.
From Wick / Thurso by train or bus
Please contact us for details if you are starting from the far north east of Scotland.
The map below is set primarily to show the relationship to the Inverness - Wick (and Thurso) railway line, though it is not displayed on the map. You can move the map around and zoom in or out to see other locations. Please note that the marker is set on the village not specifically the bed and breakfast.
