Our B&B in Culrain is about 16 miles from Lairg. We are also connected to Lairg via the bus service from Invershin. There is a train connection too, though the walk from the railway station into Lairg is rather long.

Lairg has a lovely modern and spacious visitor centre, the Ferrycroft, which is free to enter, has a cafe and exhibitions many of which are specially designed for children. There is a lovely garden with wood carvings of animals, and trails up Ord Hill with fine views of Loch Shin, and another low level all-abilities trail through the delightful Ferrycroft woods. A family with young children can be kept well occupied here for quite a few hours.

The famous Shin Falls are just outside the village and there are also fine waterfalls at Rosehall, a fairly short drive from Lairg. There is also a trail through a gorge with wood sculptures, between Lairg and Rosehall.

Lairg sits at the south end of Loch Shin and is a gateway to the north of Scotland.

To the north the road splits into the A836 for Tongue on the north coast, and the A838 for Laxford Bridge on the north west coast. Either route can take you to Durness making a fine circular day trip.

To the east the A839 heads towards Golspie and the main A9 coastal road for Thurso, Wick and John O'Groats.

To the west the A837 heads towards Ledmore Junction for Ullapool to the south and Lochinver to the north. The A837 road north can be combined with the A838 from Laxford Bridge back to Lairg for another fine circular day trip.
